The influence of geodemographic classification on the shaping of Britain over the last decade was noted in the BBC’s documentary series, ‘History of Now: The Story of the Noughties’. 

The programme questioned the effect of marketing and consumerism on the democratic and political process over the last decade.

As when we had our family pceturis taken you do a great job. I have to admit I am partial about Taylor's pceturis. You had so much to work with how could you go wrong!!!!! She has beauty inside and out and you made that show in her pceturis. Doesn't she have the most beautiful eyes you have ever seen. Love your work!!

The project


Postcode Portraits is an investigation into the effects of social classification on the British landscape.

Taking Experian's geodemographic segmentation system, Mosaic UK, as a starting point, the project aims to produce 67 portraits – one for each of the "types" defined by Mosaic for the purpose of market analysis (see left-hand column). Every postcode in Britain corresponds to one of these types.

The portraits will look at the relationship between people and places. Their subjects will include individuals, families and groups of neighbours that occupy a postcode, dwellings and urban landscapes.
The portraits and the process of making them invites the public, artists, architects and activists, community groups, school children and urban planners, academics, politicians and corporations to explore how, over the last 50 years, the postcode has become central to the evolution of the British environment.

The project is collaborative and is as much about this participation and collaborative production as the portraits themselves. The progress of the project, as well as the research leading up to each portrait, will be recorded on this blog. It is intended that this site will become a resource for the subject and a place for debate and dissemination of ideas.

The project will be publicly exhibited at galleries across the UK.
